Have you ever wondered what the secret to losing weight  is?  Like is it some magic pill or powder that we could mix up and drink?  Or how about a Genie’s lamp that we can make wishes on?  That sounds like an Easy Button commercial.  lol “Lose Weight Secret Button Sold HERE!!”

“Lose Weight Secret Button Sold Here”

I personally don’t think there really is a secret, per se.  I think the ‘secret’ is we have to desire it enough to make a commitment to lose unwanted weight then make a plan and make that plan a daily priority.

We have to find a ‘why’ first.  Why do you want to lose weight?  Is it a quick reason such as an upcoming wedding, or class/family reunion or vacation on a beach?  Or is it longer term like losing post baby weight or is it a lifestyle change becos you’re sick and tired or being sick and tired?  Tired of losing the same 3 – 5 pounds for years.  Or tired of not having enough energy to enjoy life; of being lethargic and depressed.  Are you feeling like you don’t want to be on the sidelines anymore….just watching life go by?

After you find your ‘why’, then you need a plan that will help you to move on a daily basis at least 10 -30 minutes a day.  As you get stronger, you will probably want to add more time to your activity.  Start with an activity you like that isn’t overwhelming.  It could be a workout dvd/video you own or can borrow from the library, walking up and down your stairs or back and forth down your street or around your neighborhood park, mall or the beach.  There are sporty activities like swimming, water aerobics, live gym or YMCA classes and dancing to your iPod, radio or tape recorder.

The nutrition factor should be part of this plan also.  They go hand in hand.  A healthy diet is very important.  When I say diet, I’m not talking about a temporary, depriving, restricted way of eating.  I’m talking about a doable permanent lifestyle change kind of eating.   Get rid of any junk food in your house and replace it with healthy versions.  Here is a schedule to gradually help you with the transition.   Next (and this is MY biggest challenge), portion control and balanced meals need to be exercised.

Ok, so once you find your why and have a plan, it’s imperative to work your plan daily so you form a habit.  It takes 21 days to form a habit.  So take it one day at a time, one workout and meal at a time.  Three weeks will pass no matter what, so why not make it a productive 3 weeks?  Simply set aside a time that can be spent on YOU – you exercising, you eating healthy, you getting healthy and fit.  Make YOU a priority!  If you need to take baby steps at first, do it…15 minutes before work, 20 minutes after work, 10 minutes at lunch time, 30 minutes while children are napping.  Whatever works for you.

If there is any “secret” to losing weight, I’d have to say it’s “Start your fitness journey and don’t quit!”
